Map scavenger hunt worksheet (PDF)The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865. Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860 caused South Carolina (and eventually 10 other southern states) to secede from the Union as their leadership perceived Lincoln to be an enemy of slavery. Roughly 620,000 Americans diedin the Civil War, making it one of the deadliest wars in the nation’s history. Following the Civil War and the reunification of the nation, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were passed, abolishing slavery in the United States and establishing equal rights for newly freed slaves.
