Personally identifiable data

When you register an account with us we collect personally identifiable information such as your email address and password. If authorized by you, we may also collect profile and other information from services like Facebook and Google. Unless you opt out, we reserve the right to send you emails related to topics such as information about the service, special offers and other marketing campaigns. You may at any time sign into your account to see any personally identifiable information we have stored. Personally identifiable data will never be shared with other companies or third parties.

Data used to improve the service

We use technologies like cookies (small files stored by your browser), web beacons, or unique device identifiers to anonymously identify your computer or device so we can deliver a better experience. Our systems or third parties also log information like your browser and operating system.

Our systems may associate this information with your activities in the course of providing service to you (such as pages you view or things you click on). To customize our service for you, we may also collect and use location data, including the real-time geographic location of your computer or device. We reserve the right to share this anonymous data with third parties, such as third party analytic services, with the purpose of improving the service.

Financial data

In order to offer paid services you may have to provide financial information such as credit card numbers, expiration dates and security codes. This information is not processed or stored by our service and it is only sent directly from you to our payment partners Stripe and PayPal over an encrypted connection. By signing up for a paid service you accept that financial information is shared with Stripe and PayPal. Please see Stripe's privacy policy and PayPal's privacy policy for information about how they handle your data.

Educational data

Any personally identifiable data collected under the GeoGuessr Education service, including student names and progress and other content, may only be used for educational purposes and will not be shared without your permission to any other companies or third parties.

Public data

Any information that you provide us that is not outlined in the sections "Personally identifiable data", "Financial data" or "Educational data" may at any time be shared publicly with with purpose of improving the service. This includes but it not limited to your nickname, profile picture, game activities, game progress and maps that you create.

GDPR and Protection rights

GeoGuessr would like to make sure you are fully aware of all your data protection rights. Every user is entitled to the following:

  • The right to access – You have the right to request GeoGuessr for copies of your personal data.
  • The right to rectification – You have the right to request that GeoGuessr correct any information that you believe is inaccurate. You also have the right to request GeoGuessr to complete information you believe is Incomplete.
  • The right to erasure – You have the right to request that GeoGuessr erase your personal data, under certain conditions.

Children under 16

If you are under the age of 16 a parent or legal guardian may at any time request all to access and/or delete all your information including both personal and public data.


We take reasonable administrative, physical and electronic measures designed to safeguard and protect your information from unauthorized access or disclosure. This includes utilizing Transport Layer Security (TLS) software, which encrypts the personal information you input. However, no security or encryption method can be guaranteed to protect information from hackers or human error. Information we collect may be stored or processed on computers located in any country where we do business.

Data Breach

Upon being notified of a (suspected or confirmed) data breach, GeoGuessr will immediately assess its impact and risk. In the case of a confirmed breach, all affected parties will be notified within 30 days. All members of GeoGuessr's staff have an obligation to report actual or potential data protection compliance failures.
