Launching the careers of ABBA and Celine Dion, the Eurovision Song Contest can be a star-maker, but winners rarely achieve long lasting success. The international song competition, which is held among countries that are members of the European Broadcasting Union (with one notable exception), has been aired annually since 1956. That makes it the longest-running yearly international television contest. Invited to take part as a guest entrant, Australia first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna. Australia is the first Oceanian country to participate in the contest. Israel began taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973. The county was allowed to participate because the Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) is a member organization of the European Broadcasting Union. Israel's entrant won last year, with the song "Toy", by Netta. That gave Israel priority consideration to be the host for the next year's contest. The Eurovision Song Contest 2019 is coming up fast. It will be the 64th edition of the contest, and it’s taking place in Tel Aviv, Israel. All 41 of the participating countries will submit an original song, and the artists will perform them live on television and radio. Residents of the participating counties will vote to determine the contest winner. Ireland has won the most times, racking up seven wins over the years. The country whose entrant scored the most points is Portugal; Salvador Sobral won the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine, with 758 points. If past viewership is any indication, the contest will get a lot of attention. It’s one of the most watched non-sporting events. Somewhere between 100 million and 600 million people watch the Eurovision Song Contest every year!
