Is Taiwan a Country?

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

Taiwan is an island off the coast of mainland China with a population of nearly 24 million. The People’s Republic of China officially claims Taiwan as part of its territory.

For the most part, however, Taiwan functions as an independent country with its own capital city, currency, and economy. At international sporting events like the Olympics, Taiwan competes separately from China under the name Chinese Taipei, and even has a special flag.

While only a few countries have an embassy in Taiwan, many of them have unofficial diplomatic relations and communicate with Taiwanese leaders. Officially, however, most countries respect the “One China” policy from Beijing, which states that there is only one government in China and that Taiwan is a part of that government.
