Dangerous city

Despite what may be emphasized in new stories, crime in most developed countries is at an all-time low. In some parts of the world, and especially in Latin America, the trend is going in the opposite direction. According to number of murders per 100,000 residents, these are the five most dangerous cities in the world.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Los Cabos is a big town located at the southernmost point of the Baja California peninsula. It is a remote beach town mostly known for its sport fishing and easy living. When one of Mexico’s top drug lords was taken into custody in 2016, the area went into violent chaos as warring factions wanted to take control of the drug routes that were left behind.

Caracas, Venezuela

Just over a decade ago, Venezuela was a relatively prosperous country that benefited from substantial oil wealth. Today the country is experiencing out of control inflation and is ruled by an authoritarian government.

Violent crime is such a problem that the military has started to avoid certain places because gangs mob them and steal their weapons.

Acapulco, Mexico

Acapulco is best known for being a resort town where tourists can relax on the beach and take in views of the mountains in the distance. In recent years, however, it has been caught in the violence over who will control the drug cartels between the United States and Mexico.

That battle has led to hundreds of deaths, both innocent and as part of the drug war, making Acapulco one of the world’s most dangerous cities.

Natal, Brazil

Natal is located at the easternmost point of Brazil. Battles between well-armed organized gangs and the police have led a significant increase in violence, making it one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

A major prison rebellion has further increased the levels of violence in the city, which to even more murders in what Brazil’s murder capital was already.

Tijuana, Mexico

Tijuana sits on the border with the United States and is only a 30-minute drive from San Diego, California. The fight to control the lucrative drug cartel has created a lot of violence, and has made Tijuana one of the most dangerous cities in the world. In 2017, the city hit a new record after it recorded over 1,700 murders in a single, or nearly five murders each day.
